Pablo Picasso's Assemblage Technique Pablo Picasso was always innovative in his approach to art, regardless of the medium in which he was working. As a sculptor, Picasso pioneered the technique of assemblage, constructing works partly or entirely of "found" objects, both natural and man-made. This revolutionary method allowed him to transcend traditional sculpting techniques and explore new artistic horizons by repurposing everyday items into extraordinary creations. Baboon and Young: A Playful Image of Motherhood In Baboon and Young, Picasso used toy automobiles, a storage jar, and a car spring to create a playful image of motherhood. The two metal cars, undersides together, form the baboon's head; the round earthenware pot, with its high handles, makes up her torso and shoulders; and the curving steel spring forms her backbone and long tail. This inventive use of found objects imbues the sculpture with a sense of whimsy and ingenuity, showcasing Picasso's ability to transform mundane items into a cohesive and imaginative artwork. Craftsmanship and Material Integration The rest of the baboon's body and the figure of her child were modeled from clay, and the whole piece was cast in bronze. This combination of materials and techniques demonstrates Picasso's versatility and craftsmanship. By integrating found objects with traditional sculpting materials, he created a dynamic and multifaceted piece that highlights his creative genius and innovative spirit.
