This bronze sculpture is a replica of Auguste Rodin's 'Adam,' a proposal made by Rodin in 1880 to flank his 'Gates of Hell' with two colossal statues: Adam and Eve, representing the first sinners. The 'Gates of Hell' is a monumental sculptural group inspired by Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. Dissatisfied with his initial version of 'Adam,' which closely resembled Michelangelo's style, Rodin altered the pose to make Adam look down, expressing shame and remorse after the Fall to sin. The sculpture, crafted using the age-old lost wax casting method, features a brown patina stain and is mounted on a black marble base with Rodin's signature. François-Auguste-René Rodin (12 November 1840 – 17 November 1917), known as Auguste Rodin, was a French sculptor considered the progenitor of modern sculpture. Despite being schooled traditionally and seeking academic recognition, Rodin's work showcased unexpected realism, influenced by his 1875 trip to Italy. His reputation grew, making him the preeminent French sculptor of his time by 1900. Rodin's legacy extends to unconventional memorials and a global recognition of his artistic contributions. This bronze replica pays homage to Rodin's artistic vision, capturing the complex emotions of Adam in a contrapposto but unnatural pose, reflecting shame and remorse. The sculpture stands as a testament to Rodin's mastery and innovation in the realm of modern sculpture.
