From the 1920s to the 1940s, the theme of a bird in flight preoccupied the renowned sculptor Constantin Brancusi. He concentrated on capturing the essence of the animal's movement rather than its physical attributes. In his iconic work, Bird in Space, Brancusi eliminated traditional elements such as wings and feathers, focusing instead on the streamlined swell of the body. He reduced the head and beak to a simple, slanted oval plane, thus abstracting the bird's form to its most essential and dynamic lines.
The sculpture balances on a slender conical footing, which enhances the figure’s upward thrust, making it appear almost unfettered and weightless.
