This stunning bronze sculpture, created by the Belgian sculptor Ernest Wante (1872-1960) circa 1900, depicts a captivating scene from Greek mythology. The sculpture portrays D'or, a beautiful woman chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster, awaiting her fate. With long flowing hair and a sensual form, she exudes a sense of vulnerability and resignation. The intricate detailing of the sculpture brings the mythological tale to life, capturing the tension and drama of the moment. D'or's plight is contrasted with the heroic intervention of Perseus, who swoops down wearing Mercury's sandals and helmet to rescue her. In a triumph of good over evil, Perseus slays the sea monster and marries Andromeda, providing a rare mythological story with a happy ending. Crafted from gilt bronze and inscribed with Wante's signature on the lower left side, this sculpture exemplifies the artist's skill and craftsmanship.
