Fearless and majestic Grecian Angel, known as god's messenger in mythology, is carrying a dying hero away from harm becoming his savior. This sculpture, titled "Gloria Victis" was designed by Mercie following France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, exemplified by the man's broken sword and fallen head. The sculpture stands on a black marble base. Mercie's original plaster sculpture won a medal at the 1874 Paris Salon. It is signed Mercie. It was cast using the lost wax method.
